Vientiane, 9 June 2010--The Lao Cement Co. Ltd with their cement factory in Viang Vieng will sign a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the German investor and project development company Climate Control Strategies GmbH to start a climate protection project together.

The Lao Cement Industry Co. Ltd is planning to join in a similar cooperation agreement with Climate Control Strategies GmbH in July.

The project aims to reduce fuel and energy costs in the cement production and at the same time protect the environment by using climate and environmentally friendly state of the art technology from Germany and Denmark.

Realizing the importance of environmental protection and global warming, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry takes part in bringing such project to its business members. “LNCCI will continue to introduce the project to other factories and industries which use fuel and electrical energy resulting in global warming,” said Mr. Vanthong Sitthikoun, LNCCI Board and President of Lao Cement Group.

The technical scope of the project is to partly switch the fuel for the thermal energy demand of the cement process from fossil hard coal to alternative climate friendly fuels such as biomass (woodchips, sawdust, rice husks etc) and municipal solid waste. Moreover additional energy efficiency measures such as frequency converters for major drives and optimizations of clinker content will reduce thermal and electrical energy demand further.

Climate Control Strategies GmbH will supply state of the art technology equipment from Germany and Denmark that will assure climate friendly production and quality improvement of the cement process. The total investment will exceed 10 million USD and commissioning of the new equipment is planned for July 2011.

The replacement of fossil coal and saving electrical and thermal energy demand will avoid substantial CO2 emissions and therefore will help to mitigate the effects of global warming and protect our climate and environment. The projects within the cement industry will avoid emissions of a minimum of 80.000 tones CO2 every year.

Moreover, the project offers the chance to support a sustainable waste management system for urban areas such as Vientiane, Thakhek and Savannaketh by using waste to energy technology and solve waste related problems such as groundwater pollution and air pollution by uncontrolled burning of waste.

The project is partly financed through the sales of certified emission reductions (CERs) under the Kyoto Protocols Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The reduction certificates will be sold to European companies who under the Kyoto protocol need to purchase CO2 emission allowances for their right to produce and emit CO2 into the atmosphere.

The project will improve the cement production process and strengthening the Lao Cement Industry in the future international markets, it will reduce emissions in the local environment and support sustainable solid waste management in urban areas in Laos

Climate Control Strategies GmbH will continue to invest in several further climate protection and environmental protection projects in Laos.

Representatives from Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Energy and Mining, members of Lao Cement Group and LNCCI also attend the signing ceremony.
